Major Obedience Success

Major takes Winners Dog, Best of Winners, 4-24-10

Major's luxuriant coat made him resemble a Teddy Bear as a puppy, so we named him after the Ursa Major or "Large Bear" Constellation, also known as the Big Dipper. He was born April 15, 2005 and is a full sibling of Howler, Aurie, Pegs and Minnie.

Major's conformation highlights include taking a 4 point major win of Winners Dog/Best of Winners at the 2010 Land O Lakes Kennel Club Show in St Paul, Minnesota and another 4 point major win at the 2010 Fond du Lac Kennel Club show in Wisconsin.  He earned his conformation Championship title from the American Kennel Club in May 2010, and then from the United Kennel Club in June 2010, with two Group 1 wins and an exciting Reserve Best in Show.  Major was ranked the #1 Class Dog in the Midwest in 2010, by the Alaskan Malamute Club of America.  In June 2012, Major earned his Grand Champion title from the AKC.

Major excels as a sled dog, running best in single or dual lead, and earned his WLD (Working Lead Dog) title in 2007.
He earned his WTD (Working Team Dog) title in 2010, completing the last two legs at the 2010 CrowDitarod weekend here at WinterStar Farm.  He then went on to pack hiking and completed all four 10 mile pack hikes for his WPD (Working Pack Dog) title in the spring; as well as weight pulling, earning all four legs for his WWPD (Working Weight Pull Dog) title by the summer of 2010.  He continued his weight pulling career and earned his WWPDX (Excellent) title in May of 2011 and his United Weight Puller Champion title in July 2012.

Major is a very friendly dog; at the Land O Lakes show, he begged many of the spectators for petting and belly rubs.  He "volunteered" for the Meet the Breed booth at the 2010 Duluth Dog Show and again enjoyed hamming it up especially with the kids who stopped by.  He is very attentive which makes him a good lead dog, and also does well in Rally; he earned his Rally Novice title in July 2010.  Major was ranked the #6 Malamute in the country in Rally Novice for 2010, by the Alaskan Malamute Club of America.  At the 2010 Alaskan Malamute Club of America Regional/National show in Denver, Colorado, Major placed 3rd in the Working Dog Showcase and 4th in the Aspenglow Weight Pull.  This multi-talented, strikingly beautiful dog is truly a joy to own!

Major sired a litter of five puppies in November 2010; the mother of the pups was Mirka, registered name Northpaw's Kosmic Kisses, owned by breeder Barb Lichota in Oxford, Pennsylvania.  We were delighted to welcome a wonderful boy from this litter, Ruckus, Northpaw's Arrakis of Winterstar, to WinterStar Farm and are enjoying seeing him follow in his Daddy's pawprints!  See the Puppy Photos page for a slideshow of this litter.  The stork visitied WinterStar Farm in December 2013 to welcome two baby girls, sired by Major; the mother was Thick't, CH Istari's Th' Plot Thickens!  We kept one girl from this litter, Scorch, here at the farm; the other girl, Janna, went to Holland to live and sled with our friends Erna and Cees Hartveld.  Watch Major's offspring grow in the "Major's Kids" slideshow at the bottom of this page.  See the Puppies page for details on any expected breedings with Major.

Major added some more letters after his name in 2011.  At Responsible Dog Ownership Day, he demonstrated weight pulling for an appreciative audience, many of whom rode on the cart he pulled to make it heavy!  In between pulls he earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Therapy Dog International (TDI) certifications.  Tim and Major also started training for obedience competition, and in October 2011, Major earned his Companion Dog (CD) obedience title in a thrilling first place finish at the Alaskan Malamute Club of America's National Specialty Show in Ann Arbor, Michigan!  See video of Major and Tim competing in obedience above.  Major was ranked the #3 Malamute in Novice Obedience in 2011 and received the Flaming Flirt Memorial Award as a result.  Also at the 2011 National Specialty, Major bagged a 4th place in the prestigious Working Dog Showcase!

In 2012, Major was the third malamute in history to be awarded the All Around Alaskan Malamute (AAAM) title by the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, at their annual banquet at the National show in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Major placed 3rd in the 2012 Working Dog Showcase Major and his son Ruckus, aka the "Major Ruckus," also won the Brace competition at this show.  The "Major Ruckus" competed in Brace again at the 2013 Malamute National show in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and won the competition at both the Regional and National.  Major also placed 3rd in the Regional Veterans Sweepstakes class.

We lost our beloved Major in January 2017, due to complications from hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of blood vessels.  He was just shy of 12 years old, and was actively running on the team until his passing.  We received many condolences from his fans around the world. His offspring continue to do him proud and continue his legacy.
